Description
Basset clarinet in A
Although the clarinet was invented at the end of the 17th century, it had to wait many years to be adopted into the orchestra. Mozart left among the most beautiful pages ever written for this instrument, the concerto KV622 written in 1791.
Anton Stadler, dedicatee of the said concerto, is probably the first clarinettist to have played the precursor instrument of the basset A and basset Horn. Clarinets that he had developed himself.
This clarinet in it is called “basset” because it offers a longer range of a major third. Instead of ending in E low, the clarinet ends in C low.
The result is a particularly warm and soft sound.
Basset Horn
The basset horn (in F), in the same lineage, was magnificently adopted by Mozart, but great composers such as Boulez or Stockhausen composed for this instrument with its luminous timbre and borrowed magic.
